Cloud Atlas Movie Review

About a year ago when I heard that the Wachowski’s were making this movie, I immediately did my research and read the amazing David Mitchel novel that is Cloud Atlas. It is now my favorite book and honestly, it’s changed me, similar to how the Matrix Trilogy inspired me to see life in a different perspective; a new direction. Now, book lovers, if you’ve seen the trailers and are a little worried about the continuity, don’t be. Yes, some details are left out and some are added, but every detail was picked out of necessity and executed in the very best of ways. I even preferred some aspects of the film to the book (ex. Adam’s segment for the most part, some simplified details in Robert’s segment, Somni and Hae-Joo’s relationship, etc.). Though there were a few things I would have loved to see in the movie that were cut, I understand that it would have made this two hour and fifty something minute movie much, much longer. Let’s hope there’s a directors cut. Before having seen the movie, I was personally worried about the fact that the actors were portraying multiple characters that did not share the same soul (granted that the only soul we know for sure is reborn each segment is Adam/Robert/Luisa/Timothy/Somni/Meronym—though it is Zachry in the movie. And as an aside, I suppose Hugo Weaving’s characters could all be the same soul, the true antagonists they are.) The point is, the actors did such an amazing job playing so many different characters that I realized that the representation of such roles had nothing to do with the continuity of the film or the overall message. As for the costume and make-up department, they did a fantastic job. I’ve been hearing bad reviews about that aspect of the film for a while now, but I have to strongly disagree with the critics. I’ll admit, not every transformation was flawless, but most were convincing and at times shocking (though I’m not sure anyone will ever be truly successful in making Hugo Weaving Asian…can you tell he’s one of my favorite actors?) Moving on. Movie lovers, if you have not read the book, it may be a bit confusing at first, but don’t let that stop you, it is very much worth your time and money. I took my sister to the movie and she hasn’t read the book. I lost count of all the times her hand went up to cover her mouth in surprise. We had a few good laughs, and if I hadn’t known the terrible fate of some of these characters, I’m sure I’d have cried at some points. This is the most complicated, heartfelt, well done movie I’ve seen all year and I highly recommend you take the time to watch Cloud Atlas movie online or in theaters. I know I’ll be going back to see it a few times. Author: Jae Z. Kitinoja from California.
